The 101 Women Plus civic organization was founded by Dorothie Dorrington in 1982 to improve the quality of life in Atlantic City as well as to organize Atlantic City women with leadership skills to help elect James L. Usry as the first black mayor in 1984. Today the group does what it always has: promotes community leadership, creates educational programs, works to bring and retain residents in Atlantic City, raises cultural awareness, fundraises for scholarships, and creates ambassadors who promote the city in their daily lives. Events include everything from visiting nursing homes with gift packages in the winter months to youth education programs.
